The Broncos were hit with some devastating news on Sunday night following their 33–30 overtime win over the Bills to advance to the AFC championship game. During his postgame press conference, head coach Sean Payton told reporters that starting quarterback Bo Nix suffered a broken ankle and will miss the remainder of the season.
All quarterbacks who ended the season on an active roster or on an injured reserve list are not eligible to become free agents until March. Players who ended the year on practice squads are eligible to sign reserve/future contracts, but that won't help the Broncos add depth for the playoffs.
To make room for DiNucci on the practice squad, Denver terminated the contract of outside linebacker Garrett Nelson. The team's 17-player practice squad is now full ahead of the AFC title game. The Broncos also designated running back J.K. Dobbins to return from injured reserve on Monday.

Game Recap: Washington’s 3rd string quarterback out-duel’s Philly’s backup QB to secure the Week 18 road win
Philly will either end up with the 2nd or 3rd seed in the NFC playoffs. Washington, with a win, is locked in at the #7 pick in April’s draft; with a loss, the Commanders could end up picking earlier if one of the 3-win teams ahead of them in the draft order were to win today. Little else hangs in the balance for either team.
The Commanders held a 10-7 lead at the time of Mariota's injury as they tried to spoil Philadelphia's effort to clinch the NFC East title.
The Broncos are signing veteran quarterback Ben DiNucci to their practice squad, according to a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter. He is expected to serve as their new third-string quarterback. There's no word yet on the team's corresponding move to make room for DiNucci on the practice squad.
The Longhorns quarterback room will look a little different next year. On Monday, backup QB Trey Owens announced that he was entering the transfer portal. While the former four-star Owens impressed in high school, he was third on the depth chart. Matthew Caldwell was the primary backup for Arch Manning, making it hard for Owens to get playing time.
The NFL world received shocking news Saturday night when Broncos coach Sean Payton revealed that quarterback Bo Nix would miss the rest of the playoffs with a broken ankle suffered on the second-to-last play of Denver’s thrilling overtime win over the Bills.
